SOLUTION

The final design was inspired by the music notation of Flying Staccatos, one of the notable violin-bowing techniques popularized by Paganini. He threw his bow in whipping action and playing scale passages with incredible rapidity. The irregular positioning of the type conveys the spontaneity of his music, giving it a personal touch but remaining sophisticated.

CHALLENGE

Explore a set of three logos for a historical figure (before the 20th c.) : one reflecting their personality, another their heritage, and last, their business or occupation. A final logo is chosen to develop coherent and compelling visual applications.

CONTEXT

I have chosen Paganini to create a mock personal brand. Paganini is a musician known for his revolutionary violin techniques and compositions.  He even gained the title "the Devil Violinist" because his amazing skills were believed to be gifted by the Devil. My goal is to celebrate his unconventionality.

PAGANINI:
THE DEVIL'S VIOLINIST

[2022] – 6 Weeks

BEHIND THE SCENES

My approach to this design was to start with a thorough research of Paganini's background, and list keywords on a mindmap. While sketching, I incorporated motifs such as his stories, performance style, violin techniques, personality and the musicality of his violin compositions (24 Caprices).

REFLECTION

The restriction of designing three brand marks from three specific categories (personality, occupation, and heritage) was challenging. By conducting multiple iterations and critiques, I was able to establish a cohesive system. This project taught me how to be specific with orchestrating various visual elements, which allows me to illustrate a visual identity that will only belong to Paganini.
